Luke Miorelli, P.E. and Jenn Sugarman of the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast (EDC) presented the EDC’s S.N.A.P. program to the AIA Space Coast chapter on April 10th. S.N.A.P., a program of the EDC’s Development Council, is an acronym for “Simplified, Nimble, Accelerated Permitting” and is intended to promote and encourage permitting best practices. The program recognizes municipalities that have adopted permitting best practices as determined by the EDC and other participating municipalities. Current S.N.A.P. communities include Brevard County, the cities of Cape Canaveral, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Melbourne, Palm Bay, Rockledge, and West Melbourne, and the St. Johns River Water Management District.

Efficient, streamlined permitting processes enhance the ability to attract new business and investment as well as retain existing businesses and encourage expansion. The EDC’s Development Council worked with input from Space Coast developers, architects, and builders to develop a best practices model for both building and site permitting. Many of the communities officially recognized by the S.N.A.P. program made significant efforts to update their policies and processes to bring them into alignment with the S.N.A.P. best practices model in order to receive the official recognition. These updates made the permitting processes more user-friendly, more efficient, and more consistent throughout the county.
